1887, Ashland, Oregon: Alice, the daughter of a prominent Oregon pioneer family, witnessed the historic completion of the Oregon & California Railroad when the final golden spike was hammered into place just outside of town. The rails changed everything for this previously isolated hamlet, as well as for Alice. Her family story, revealing passions and the true grit of a single mother is set among the historical events that span half a century.
S. K. DeMarinis bought a Victorian home in Ashland in 1985. To celebrate its first century, Sue began to research the original owners and historic events. More was exposed when archived newspapers revealed scandals that followed the first woman resident from the 1880s into the 1920s.
